Salary and Benefits

Salary

Salaries for teachers who join TeacherNex are determined by the position and the school where they are hired. Teachers hired through TeacherNex are compensated the same as any other equivalent in the same school.

For teachers who acquire jobs in Newark Public Schools, salary is dependent on experience, education level and related coursework. In 2009-2010, the starting salary in Newark was $48,500. You will become a salaried employee of the district when all teachers report back to work at the start of the school year; teachers typically receive their first paycheck during the first month of school.

For teachers who are offered and accept jobs in charter schools, salaries vary from school to school. Charter schools typically offer salary scales that compare competitively with those of Newark Public Schools.

Benefits

If you teach with Newark, you will receive comprehensive benefits. Visit Newark Public School’s Human Resources Website to learn more.

Charter schools offer standard benefit packages that compare competitively with Newark Public Schools. Payment and benefits differ according to the charter network and are based on years of teaching experience, among other factors in a teacher’s background.

Summer Stipend

After the summer training institute, you will be provided with a stipend to help support the cost of attending Institute. You will not be able to work during the six-weeks of Institute and need to plan ahead financially.  In 2010, the stipend was $1000.  This stipend is intended to reimburse you for the cost of travel, materials and expenses associated with training over the course of the six weeks.  This stipend will be distributed only after you successfully complete the training institute and have met all prior requirements.

Because of the timing of the stipend and because the time between the end of training and your first paycheck may be lengthy, as it is hard to predict when you will secure a full-time teaching position, we strongly encourage you to take appropriate measures to ensure your financial well-being during this time.

Loan Forgiveness

As a teacher, you may be eligible for loan deferment or forgiveness if you have a Stafford, Perkins or Eisenhower loan. You should contact your lender to determine eligibility or access more information about loan forgiveness from the federal government.

AmeriCorps Education Award Program

As an alternate-route teacher in our hiring pool, you may be eligible to apply for the AmeriCorps Education Award Program in order to earn an education award worth $4,725.  More information will be provided to teachers who enroll in the hiring pool and attend training.
