New Jersey Certification

You will participate in an accelerated alternate route to certification program, teaching full-time while completing licensure requirements. Rather than completing a traditional teacher education program prior to entering the classroom, you will first engage in an intensive summer training that is specifically designed for TeacherNex candidates, before completing additional academic certification (also known as licensure or credential) requirements while teaching full-time. This allows you to become a fully licensed teacher in the State of New Jersey while teaching and earning a full salary and benefits.

TeacherNex will support you to secure a Certificate of Eligibility.   This requires pre-service coursework provided by state-approved providers ( a complete list of providers can be found on the website of the New Jersey Department of Education) as well as passing scores on all Praxis II exam(s) related to your assigned certification area.  All costs associated with coursework and tests are the responsibility of the candidate.

Once you have a Certificate of Eligibility (CE), you will be eligible for employment as a teacher.  Your Certificate of Eligibility becomes a Provisional Teaching Certificate when you are hired. Once hired, you must enroll in an approved program that leads to a Standard Teaching Certificate.  TeacherNex has partnered with two certification providers to provide options for our candidates.  Some candidates work towards a master’s degree while others elect to pursue a one-year certification only course.  Special education teachers, as well as teachers in bilingual settings are required to pursue additional coursework called an endorsement.

While TeacherNex helps you connect the pieces to earn your teaching certificate, it is ultimately your responsibility to meet certification program requirements. By enrolling in TeacherNex, candidates commit to working toward and completing all certification requirements. Note that all certification courses and requirements are determined and managed by Newark Public Schools, the State of New Jersey, and/or licensure partners—not TeacherNex.  More detailed information on enrollment in and cost of an alternative licensing program, including applicable grants and financial aid, will be provided to you upon enrollment in TeacherNex.  Candidates are responsible for covering the costs of licensure course requirements.
